Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam
This Flamenco Biennal's Intermezzo is presented in the Royal Concertgebouw of Amsterdam in cooperation with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. It is the very first concert in the new Horizon Series, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is showcasing music from and about Andalusia under the direction of Xian Zhang with two leading performers in the flamenco world: singer Mayte Martín and dancer Vanesa Aibar.
For centuries, diverse peoples – including Romans, Arabs, Jews and gypsies – contributed to the rich culture of Andalusia. Andalusian folk music had a major influence on Manuel de Falla – whose ballet El amor brujo (Spellbound Love) contains fiery instrumental dances –, on Joaquín Turina, and on the contemporary Spanish composer Mauricio Sotelo.
In the new Horizon Series, the orchestra is adding new works to the symphonic repertoire, presenting them thematically alongside modern classics from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The concerts still kick off with a curtain-raiser, this particular evening hosted by the Flemish writer Stefan Brijs, who will be talking about Andalusia. The always exciting Entrée Late Night Café follows the concerts in this series.
