Dutch pianist Tony Roe, leader of mischievous jazz trendsetters Tin Men and the Telephone, has fallen under the spell of flamenco. And he has found his soulmate in “El Bola”, aka as Spanish flamenco guitarist José Quevedo, not just a celebrated guitarist but also a successful flamenco producer for artists like Miguel Poveda and Marina Heredia. The two musicians met at the 2015 Flamenco Biennial and had an instant rapport. In DeDos – a play on the Spanish words for “duo” and “fingers” – Tony Roe and José Quevedo destroy the established flamenco codes with their nimble fingers, then rebuild them with just as much zest and virtuosity. In this exploration of flamenco, swinging rhythms from southern Spain’s Jerez de la Frontera and jazz improvisations circle each other freely and playfully, reaching sophisticated heights.
