The Art of the Jazz Flamenco Trio
Flamenco and jazz form a happy marriage. Especially in Madrid, the genre is on the rise, due to the young and energetic bands and musicians making the scene. The top of this new wave will perform in the program The Art of the Jazz Flamenco Trio, as part of the Flamenco Biënnale PART 1 which will take place 22 Jan – 6 Feb 2021 ON|OFF in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht.
Part 1: Al Toque | Pablo Martín Caminero Trio
Pablo Martín Caminero, a striking double bassist from the flamenco jazz scene of Madrid, is a musical gourmand. In his latest project Al Toque he builds lovely bridges between jazz and flamenco. His versatility shines through his interpretation of flamenco guitar classics he arranged for piano, bass and drums. A typical jazz line-up, with a classical piano vibe. The album – that will be presented for the first time at our festival 2021 – sounds promising with pieces by axe legends such as Sabicas, Manolo Sanlucar, Moraíto Chico, Vicente Amigo, Cañizares, Rafael Riqueni and of course Paco de Lucía.
Caminero has adapted the classical repertoire for this original trio in which the pulse of flamenco is always present with Paquito González on percussion, and falsetas and improvisations by the hand of jazz pianist Moisés Sánchez. Caminero makes the most of the possibilities of his double bass and takes a new step in combining flamenco and jazz with this ambitious project. A world premiere at the BIMHUIS in corona times.
Pablo Martín Caminero is this year’s artist-in-residence of the Dutch Flamenco Biennial. In January at our festival PART 1 he will perform with his trio for a limited audience and live stream. In November at PART 2 we hope to welcome him in various formations during the festival.
